Editor's Corner -- Yet Another Rant

Why does it matter?

I've been bothered by the fact that I've been losing my hair for about a decade now. It's a daily nuisance, always bubbling up into my awareness at various points throughout the day. This begs the question. Why do I give a rat's ass?

I guess there are many reasons that I can come up with:

  • "A big forehead makes me look old"

  • "People keep staring at my forhead when they talk to me"

  • "There are older guys that look better than I do because they have more hair"

  • "I feel uncomfortable when someone walks or sits behind me"

  • "Society gives more breaks to people with more hair"

  • ...etc...

The point of the matter is that these are all surface issues that don't get to the bottom of it. Am I insecure? I don't feel insecure in most other respects, but I guess in this one I do. The bottom line for me is that having more hair makes me feel better. I'm sure there are a lot of men out there that don't mind being bald, or if they do they don't show it and it doesn't bother them all that much. To these men I express my congratulations. I guess I just ain't one of those guys.

Part of the reason why I haven't given up, and why I am sure a lot of you haven't either, is that there are many things we can do to fight hair loss. We don't have to take it gracefully because we have options. They are not perfect solutions by any means, but they give us hope for more locks in the near future.

For people that are not losing their hair I am sure it's difficult to understand the following point: a lot of guys (and even women!) suffer from hair loss, and find it very psychologically and emotionally disturbing.

So why does it matter? I guess I don't really know. But I do know that I will keep fighting it. And I do know that doing something about it makes me feel better. In the end, how people that suffer from hair loss deal with it is up to them. The key is to not get sucked into the hype or BS, and never let it get to you so much that you can't function. If it is any consolation to you, I had lost a lot of hair by the time I got married, and my wife (who happens to be both very hot and intelligent) says she doesn't think hair loss matters at all. I'll keep fighting it though, for the hell of it.
