Editor's Corner -- Yet Another Rant

DMSO for hair loss

Visiting the various forums for hair loss and alopecia of late has been interesting for me. There are a lot of people using DMSO (either by itself, or mixed with other drugs and/or compounds of one sort or another) to fight their hair loss, and quite a few of them claim to have regrown a lot of hair. The excitement surrounding DMSO for hair loss is palpable.

The person who really brought DMSO into the limelight when it came to regrowing hair goes by the pseudonym of MisterOz in the forums, and is a most interesting fellow. I do not doubt his assertations that DMSO has grown hair for him, and I also find many of the others that claim it has worked wonders for them to be believable.

I personally have decided against its use however, until more research is available on whether it really regrows more hair than the current treatments that have been proven to do so, and whether it is safe. DMSO has been used as an industrial strength solvent, and it is supposed to be able to penetrate into the bloodstream through the skin very easily. It can carry things in with it. In my opinion, that makes it dangerous if used with the wrong things. I would love to get the results that some of the people that are using it for hair loss claim to be getting. But I am going to hold off on using it for now, and I would recommend that you do so as well.

Hair is not worth the potential of causing yourself harm, no matter how desparate you are, and no matter how bad you think your situation is. As I have said in the past, how your hair loss effects you is how you perceive it to. And if you are at the point where you are willing to risk potential harm to regrow your hair, that's your prerogative, but I still reserve judgement on DMSO. We will undoubtedly learn more about the long term effects of DMSO in the next few years. I really hope it is proven to be a safe and effective treatment for hair loss, but until it is, I'll stick with my current regimen.
