Depression and Hairloss
It is not uncommon in popular hair loss forums on the net to find individuals suffering from depression. They may explicitly state it, or you can just tell from reading their posts. Most of these people are depressed at least partially because of their hair loss, but occasionally some people are just plain depressed and don't know why. Or they're depressed for some unrelated reason. Whatever the case may be, I'm convinced that depression can induce hairloss.
This is because for the last month or so, I have been experiencing some depression due to some events in my life over which I have no control. I'm an optimist and a realist, and I know that with time it will subside, but I've been shedding like crazy, more so than I have ever shed before. I am losing hundreds of hair a day. In fact, I think it is a telogen effluvium. I hope that this hair will all grow back, because I don't think its directly a result of my male pattern hair loss, but for now I have to just cross my fingers and hope that the loss stops soon.
In any case, I would suggest to anyone who is suffering from depression -- whether as a result of your hair loss, or something else -- to continue to treat it with a proper regimen regardless, and not despair. I know this is easier said than done.
In my own case, I know exactly what is causing the depression, and I know that it will eventually subside, but to those of you who feel terrible and don't know why, I would suggest going to see a doctor to get medical treatment. Some depression treatments can have hair loss as a side-effect, but if you're so depressed that it is affecting your life in a negative way, then hair loss treatment has to sit on the back-burner until you deal with the depression. Hang in there and take care of yourself. I'll explore the relationship between hair loss and depression more in the future on this site as I think it is a very important topic.
