4.5 months post-op after second hair transplant

Posted on Monday 1 September 2008

For all intents and purposes, I have a full head of hair now, after a second hair transplant with Dr. Wong of Hasson and Wong.

I went in to the clinic in April and booked a second procedure.  The surgery itself went very smoothly.

I have gotten passed the regrowth phase after the initial fall-out of the transplanted hair.  For those of you who are not familiar with hair transplant surgery, within a month of the surgery most of the transplanted hair falls out.  It grows back slowly over the period of up to a year and a half.   Most of the hair will have regrown by the sixth month post-op though.  In my case, I think about 75% of the hair has grown back after 4.5 months.

Even if I had no more growth, what has come in is sufficient.   I have what can be considered a full head of hair.  The remaining 25% or so that hasn’t grown back is just going to thicken things up a bit.   It’s basically icing on the cake as far as I’m concerned.

I’m glad I went for the second hair transplant.  The first basically filled in where I was thinning up top, but did nothing to bring my hair line down.
The second transplant reconstructed my hair line and temples to a Norwood 1 (on the Norwood scale for male pattern baldness).

In my opinion, at some point, if one has tried the various treatments available and given them enough of a shot to see how well they’ll work, if the results don’t measure up, a hair transplant from a really good surgeon is a good option.

Stay tuned for new pics.

Thirty-four years with hair

Damn it feels great to still have a full-head of hair. The older I’m getting the more my current hair line (post hair transplant) fits my look. It’s like I’m settling in. My confidence in how I look has never been higher. I’m in a great new relationship, I’m more fit than I’ve ever been before in my life, and I have to give a lot of credit to the way my hair now looks.

It’s a sense of relief in that your hair is not the focal point for the person you’re talking to, your friends, your boss…. your girl. I’m planning on going in to lower the hair line a wee bit more and bring the temples in to take it to the level where I feel is a bit less conservative, a bit more bold. I’m looking forward to it and will chronicle it here in detail.

In the meantime, I wanted to update you on what I’ve been taking from a treatment perspective over the past year and a half. I have been taking 1.25mg of finasteride 3 times a week. I consider this to be the minimum required to give my existing hairs a good shot of staying on my head. Other than that, I’ve changed my lifestyle and diet in a way that has had unforeseen effects on my hair. By making certain improvements I have seen thicker more dense hair overall, an improvement in texture, an increase in styling options, and faster growth than before. I’m very pleasantly surprised. I used to have folliculitis and irritation. These have been completely eliminated, as far as I can sense or tell anyway.

It’s 3:24AM. I’m tired as hell. Gonna hit the sack, but check back here tomorrow for a series of fresh articles on how I have successfully fought my hair loss.
