Is hair loss possible at 17? (Continued)
I wasn't sure how to respond to your questions Dr. Khadavi so I just filled out another one of these question forms. Here's my original post in case you forgot:
I'm a little over 17.5 years old and for the last 4 months I've been shedding a lot more hair. I haven't had any substantial stress and I got my blood tested and the doctor said it was fine; getting all the nutrition I need (i'm a vegetarian), thyriod is working fine and I'm not anemic. He said to wait 6 months and then come back. My hair has been shedding a lot for around 4 months now and I can tell it has thinned a lot. I've heard that it will naturally regrow itself? But is it also possible that DHT is causing my problem? What should I do?
My new response to your questions:
My hair loss seems to be all over the whole scalp, not one area in particular. My hair is around 4 to maybe 5 inches in length. When i run my hands through my hair and fell my scalp, I feel lots of tiny bristly hairs. My hair has thinned, both in texture and density. I'm not sure if i'm getting the correct amount and type of proteins in my diet. When i went to the doctor to get my blood tested about 2 months ago, he said I was getting all my nutrients. I assume that means proteins too, maybe not. Oh yeah, and i've been vegetarian for 1 year 7 months. They checked my blood to see my thyriod was producing enough of a chemical, which it is. They also checked to see if i was anemic, which I'm not. And did a red blood cell count I think. He said that i probably started losing the hair from stress, but when it started happening (the shedding), i had no strong stress at all. He also said that it takes about a period of 6 months for the hair to return to normal equilibrium rate. My mom also suggested that it could be because i dyed my hair black. I dyed in December, but it didnt start shedding a lot until January. But i also dyed it and have bleached it in the past and it hasnt started shedding. But i'm worried.
Dear Aaron,
You may be experiencing male pattern hair loss due to DHT. But to be absolutely sure, you need to see a dermatologist to diagnose your condition before embarking on any treatment.
