eyelash loss / aolpecia totalis
I am afflicted witth alopecia totalis and have just begun investigating eyelash transplantaation. My dermatologist has been able to restore my brows with localized injections of a steroid drug into the subcutaneous fat layer of the brow. However the injections must be repeated every 6 wks. Can lash transplantation be done without scalp donor site? If so, how? Unfortunately for my condition, none of the stratgies we have tried has caused regrowth on the scalp.
Because of a lack of donor hair on the scalp, eyelash transplantation in alopecia totalis is not typically possible. There is also the issue of the skin of the lid which may "fight off" transplanted hair.
However, we have had some success with hair follicle stimulation using prostaglandin analogs, such as bimatoprost (Latisse), in these areas.
There is no 'textboook' treatment available and the results vary.
Latisse might also synergize with the steroid injections in the brow, helping decrease the frequency of injections needed.
I recommend a consultation to determine the best course of action.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
