Hair Transplants
I had hundreds of hair plugs transplanted in 1972. Within 2 or 3 years they all fell out. I believe at that time they compromised the blood supply.
Since then I have had the front hairline redone with excellent results. I have been told that I could still have 1000 grafts harvested from my sides and back but since they are extemely thin, I fear my sides and back will look depleted.
Should I wait until cloned grafts have been perfected or go ahead and take a chance on harvesting 1000 more grafts from my thin donor areas? I am 67 years of age and am only concerned about thicking my frontal hairs; not the entire scalp.
Keith,
Thank you for your question regarding the older 'hair plug' transplant procedures you have had in the past and what options you have today.
Unfortunately, 'cloning' or hair multiplication is still many, many years away.
However, we have successfully performed many 'touch-up' procedures for men who have had transplants years ago. New methods of harvesting--like Follicular Unit Extraction (also called "FUE") using new devices, like the NeoGraft for example, can be helpful in harvesting some of the permanent hairs from the back of the scalp for transplantation in cases like yours.
These new FUE/NeoGraft procedures are performed without the use of a scalpel or stitches, allowing individual follicles or groups of follicles to be harvested from areas normally not accessable with a scalpel. This means that we can most likely harvest many more than just 1000 grafts, if needed, without the risk of visually depleting the coverage of the donor area.
These grafts could then be used to reinforce the frontal area--where they are needed the most.

I look forward to helping you.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bauman
