menopausal hair loss
57 year old female. I recently became aware that the hair on the top of my scalp is thinning - to the point where I have to comb my hair :just so" in order to hide it. I also have mild itching that seems start about two inches above each of my ears and goes over the top of my head, but ,y scalp does not appear inflamed. The hair that I am losing has a little "bulb" at the end of it. Went to my dermatologist who ran blood tests and said there is no internal cause for it, although he did not test my hormone levels. I am considering starting the bioidentical hormone therapy, but was wondering if I should be evaluated by a hair restoration physican first. If the loss is hormonal related, would I be having "handfuls" of hair coming out? Because that doesn't seem to be the case, although I have definitely noticed an increase in the amount of hair that I see after shampooing and blow drying my hair.
Thank you
Thank you for your question regarding menopausal hair loss in women. At Bauman Medical Group, nearly 50% of all of our patients are women with a hair thinning problem. Women's hair loss can be influenced by a number of factors, including heredity (genetics), hormonal changes, diet/nutrition, stress, illness, medications, etc. Therefore, we always recommend a complete evaluation before reommending any kind of treatment. As a board-certified hair restoration physician, I can help you with this kind of evaluation and make recommendations regarding what treatment will be most likely to help you reach your hair restoration goals. Be sure, there is no 'miracle cure' for women's hair loss, but we do have some very effective treatments available. Most women will likely need a combination of treatments (a multi-therapy or multi-modality approach) to reach their goals. Unfortunately, your local dermatologist may not necessarily be equipped to perform a complete hair loss evaluation or be able to offer these kinds of specialized treatments for hair loss. I encourge all patients to start by emailing me at doctorb@baumanmedical.com to begin the evaluation process. We gather the information, ask questions, etc. before recommending any kind of treatments or procedures.
My staff and I look forward to helping you.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
