exercise
Hi Dr Bauman
Can you please advise if doing regular exercise (weights and cardio) along with taking a basic protein supplement (but not steroids) will have any adverse effect on hair loss whilst taking Propecia and Minoxidil.
Big fan of all your work
Al
Al, Thank you for your question regarding exercise, workouts, supplements and hair loss. For reasons not completely understood, many competitive athletes (and recreational ones, too) have a tough time with hair loss and hair quality.
It could simply be related to how your body is metabolizing food into energy for your body-systems... but we don't know.
Obviously, anabolic steroids (testosterone/testosterone boosters) can eventually turn into DHT triggering additional hair loss in those susceptible. I've also seen that creatine (mechanism unknown) seems to inhibit good quality hair growth. No studies in the literature to my knowledge, but after 15 years of practice, I can tell you there's no coincidence with creatine and hair loss. Propecia, minoxidil, laser therapy, nutritional supplements (biotin/viviscal pro) can be helpful. However, you need to have an evaluation to check the status of your hair and track any miniaturization that is going on.
Sincerely,
Dr. Alan Bauman
