Minoxidil side effects
I\'ve been using minoxidil for about five months with what appears to be moderate success. But within the last month I noticed a possible rash: a dry, bumpy texture to my scalp where I apply the minoxidil. I picked at it and little clumps came out. I noticed the back of my head has spots where hair seems to be less fill, and it appears where the dry, bumpy texture is...I\'ve tried T-Gell and Scalpicin, neither seems to help...can I still take Minoxidil considering the effects? Is it harmful?
Scott, Thank you for your question about minoxidil side effects, like skin irritation.
I'm glad to hear that you are having some success with the treatment, although I'm not happy to hear about the scalp-irritation. Long-distance email diagnosis is next to impossible, but I can tell you that one of of ten patients get a scalp irritation from the OTC minoxidil so bad that they have to stop the medication. I've got a variety of minoxdil preparations that I prescribe through a compounding pharmacy that enables me to adjust the strength of the minoxidil and the amount of (unfortunately necessary) irritants in the liquid. For example, the most popular minoxidil preparations amongst my patients isn't Rogaine or generic solution or even Foam--it is an off-label 6% minox which contains several soothing anti-inflammatory ingredients. Patients find that it's less irritating and they are able to stick with it and stay on it for years and years. It is so popular in the office amongst patients, that my staff calls it 'Baumanoxidil!!' LOL
