loss of eyelashes due to radiation treatments
I had a "pseudolymphoma" under my left eye in the mid-80s treated with radiation. As a consequence I have lost both upper and lower eyelashes on that eye. There is a permanent scar on the skin below my left eye, and the skin under that eye continues to be somewhat delicate. About three years ago I had plastic surgery taking sagging skin above my eyelid and grafting it to my lower lid as the radiation scar was pulling down on my lower lid and causing me problems with dryness. (It was not cosmetically that pleasant either.) That surgery went fine, although I have still a lot of trouble with dryness on that side. Do I sound like someone who even has a shot at something like eyelash transplantation?
Cynthia, Thank you for your question on eyelash transplantation after experiencing eyelash loss from surgery and/or radiation. If the quality of the skin of the upper lid is normal (or near normal), eyelash transplantation might be an option for you to restore your lashes--permanently. We do not transplant the lower lids, however. The risks of eyelash transplant surgery are similar to the risks of any eyelid surgery. If you can provide photos or visit us for an eyelash transplant evaluation, I can get a better idea of your situation and help determine a course of action for you. I look forward to helping you restore your lashes.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
