Propecia Side Effects
Dr. Bauman,
I was wondering if you recall writing an article about the potential side effects of using Propecia? The article stated that you have been using it for about the last 15 years with patients and that side effects were about 3 out of 1000 patients. I am wondering if that information is correct in your experience? Have you ever had a patient that discontinued use of the drug and had side effects that did not go away? Thank you
Philip,
Since I started practicing medicine in 1995, I have encountered very few patients who needed to stop the medication Propecia because of side effects. In my practice, I prescribe literally hundreds of thousands of propecia pills per year. In clinical trials, about one to two percent of patients had side-effects, but "in real life" the incidence is lower. Most patients who have side-effects can actually reverse the side-effects WITHOUT stopping the medication--with just proper counseling. Sometimes, just changing the dose to the evening-time for example, works to decrease side effects. In 15 yrs, I have NEVER seen a patient whose side effects did not go away after stopping the medication. Remember that as men age, their libido may naturally decline.
In my experience, I see that about 3 of 1000 patients on Propecia need to stop the medication because of side effects.
Let me know if you have other questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. Alan Bauman
