Female Hair Loss -
Dr.
Wanted to find out...my hair has been progressively thinning for the last 15 years (it started profusely after the birth of my son) I have done almost everything from trying all sorts of remedies to having a scalp biospy and finding out that I have Lichen Planus of which I've used the drugs Cortex and have been using the 2% Nizoral and noticed very little hair regrowth. This was at least 7 years ago. I have stopped using the Cortex (6 yrs ago) and within the last four years have been using Olux and the 2% Nizoral. I must admit that I have not been extremely consistent, but have noticed no regrowth...only gradual thinning. Within the month, my doctor prescribed for me the drug Plaquenil and after reading the side effects of the drug there's a chance that it causes hair thinning. I'm afraid to take it. I cannot afford to lose anything!! Should I chance taking this drug? Thanks for any help you can provide. Frances
Dear Frances,
Plaquenil is used for lichen planus, and yes unfortunately is associated with hair loss. But given the fact that you have not grown hair for the last 6 years with the standard therapy, I think it is a good idea to start plaquenil.
