cause and treatment for hairloss
Approximately six months ago I started losing a lot more hair than normal in the shower and when combing it out when wet. It also would just break off at different lengths (I have long hair)and the new growth that I have is weak thin hair. About two months after this started I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started taking Synthroid. The problem is the hair loss has only minimally slowed and the new growth is still thinner weaker hair. While I am losing hair from all areas of my head it does seem to be concentrated above the temples and through the top. In the temple area I notice the baby like hair regrowth the most. I have seen two endocrinologists and a dermatologist to get help with the hairloss and haven't really gotten any definitive answers for the cause or further suggestions for treatment. I am questioning whether the hairloss is caused from the thyroid condition or if I am experiencing female pattern hair loss. I am 40 years old and my siblings (all older)and parents all have fuller healthy heads of hair. I of course would like to stop my hairloss before it gets worse. What type of hairloss do you think I am experiencing? And what do you suggest I try for treatment?
Tina,
Hair loss like yours is typically due to a combination of factors, so the answer is "yes" to female pattern genetic hair loss, and "yes" to the hypothyroidism too. The key is using a multi-therapy approach to fight the hair loss. Combinations of medication, nutritional supplementation, even laser therapy can decrease the need for (or amount of) transplantation later on. At my clinic, I like to prescribe these treatments after a complete exam. If you cannot come in for an examination and evaluation, I would suggest a 'virtual consultation' including digital photos via the internet. You can email me at doctorb@baumanmedical.com for more info on how to do this, or simply visit my website www.baumanmedical.com.
Unfortunately, even with tight control over your thyroid medication, only rarely is there improvement of the hair without additional treatments. Let me know what additional questions you have.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
