Hypothyroidism

Question

Dear Dr. Khadavi, I am a 20 year old male who has recently been diagnosed with hypothyroidism. I have a TSH level of 5.17 and a Free Thyroxine level of 0.88, i'm unsure of the units. I was wondering if my receding hair line and excessive thinning on top of my head will eventually stop and grow back with treatment. Also I would like to know if takign propecia would help the situation. I read on some random website that hair may not regrow fully because of the hypothyroidism.

Dear Steven, It is unclear if the hair loss is due to your thyroid condition or a result of male pattern hair loss. You should first see a dermatologist to diagnose the condition before you initiate any treatment.
