Is MPB associated with any other medical problems?

Question

Is MPB associated with any other medical problems?

Answer

Unfortunately, yes. Most importantly, MBP is a risk factor for prostate cancer. As reported in the May 2000 issue of Cancer Epidemiology (dceg2.cancer.gov/pdfs/hawk92000.pdf), the age-standardized incidence of prostate cancer was greater among men with male pattern baldness, regardless of the severity of baldness. Men with MPB had an approximate 50% excess risk for clinically detectable prostate cancer.

There are other medical problems that are associated with MPB: benign prostatic hyperplasia1 ; coronary heart disease2; hyperinsulinemia3; and insulin-resistance-associated disorders, such as obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia4.
