Question

First of all, thanks for providing this site. I have found a good deal of the info provided here to be quite useful. Okay, my question deals with recover from transplant surgery. I am in my mid 20's and have begun to receed at the temples. When I was younger, I always wore my hair short and messy. Now, as my hair continues to disappear, I found myself more comfortable growing my hair out to hide the problem. Of course, I really miss wearing my hair short. I have already made up my mind that I will get the surgery---it is just a matter of when. Which brings us to my point. I work very long hours. And my business is one where you are discouraged from taking any time off, especially at the junior level. Essentially, my firm owns me for two years. I would love to do the surgery now, but my problems are 1) everyone would know I did it, and 2)I couldn't take more than one or two workdays off. Is my situation hopeless? Is it possible to return to work right away? And is there any way to "conceal" that I had something done over the my little break? I have heard about people putting hair systems over transplant surgeries, but that just sounds crazy (and I would have to shave all my good hair off to attach it, I would assume). Finally, are there any alternatives to Propecia that don't have lactose as an inactive (say, Finpecia maybe?)? Okay, this is an absurdly long email. I'll understand if you don't answer.

Answer

FR, Most patients heal completely from hair transplant surgery in about a week or two. Taking a few days off from work is recommended, in order to improve your recovery. If you can't wear a hat and go back to work with the scabs from the procedure, you will have to wait until you get some time off. Let me know what questions you have regarding an effective treatment plan. Sincerely, doctorb@baumanmedical.com
