Unknown Reason for Hair Loss
Dear Dr. Bauman,
My hair loss has been a puzzle to me for several years. I'm a 29 year old black female, and my hair started thinning when I was 22, not long after I had my second child. When it first started, it thinned horribly pretty much all over. I was taking Depo for birth control at the time, so I quickly stopped using it, assuming that it had to be the problem. The extreme thinning did stop, but my hair never returned to its fullness; my hair stayed especially thin on top of my head near the front and at the crown, and I feel that I still loose more hair each day than I should. I recently discussed this with my doctor, who was really clueless, she said it was a natural process, but suggested I try Rogain, which I've just started. I guess I should also mention that I've been in a stressful, miserable marriage for 8 years; around the time when I noticed my thinning hair, I also noticed that I had 2 grey hairs; which I thought was truly odd for my age and ethnicity. I will also mention that my scalp is often extremely itchy and with dandruff, even right after I wash it. Many times it feels sore, and every now and again I notice painful pimples on my scalp. I no longer relax my hair b/c I feel the chemicals could possibly do my scalp more harm in its present unhealthy condition. Do you think it's possible for my hair to ever regain a reasonable amount of thickness? And if so, can you give any suggestions on what I should do to reach that goal? Thank you so much.

Yulonda,
An exact diagnosis of your problem over the internet is not possible. However medications to stimulate hair growth (like minoxidil) and procedures (like hair transplantation) might be a part of a regimen to improve the coverage of your scalp. It would be impossible to tell what treatments would work best for you without seeing you in-person, or at least seeing some photos of your hair loss status. Do not lose hope, however. There are effective treatments available.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
