Eczema on face
On one side of me face, below my cheek I have a white patch and the skin is rough and flaky, 1 cm wide, 5 cm long. I went to my family doctor and he mentioned that this is Eczema, probably due to allergies. I was using Nizoral 2% for about a week and vasaline for another few weeks to treat it (with no success) however my family doctor said that this (Nizoral) doesn't appear to be the proper medicine to treat this kind of skin problem. (In the past I had problems using soaps/shampoo's with perfume in them. Recently I switched to a different razor blade brand and I believe this caused the eczema this time because of the gel strip on the blade). He prescribed Elocom 0.1% Mometasone Furoate cream to apply to the area twice daily. I used it for a week and the roughenss and flakyness went away though the discoloration remained. I then stopped shaving for about 2 weeks. Now that I shaved again today I noticed that the pigmentation is still white (my regular skin tone is brown) and it started getting a little rough, a kind of dryness. So I started using this medication again. My question is, should I continue to use this medication even after the dryness goes away for like an extra week? I also don't like this white spot on my face, will it return back to my regular skin color which is brown or can I do anything to speed it up to returning to it's normal color. Thank you
Dear John,
The discoloration is a result of the eczema on the face called Pityriasis Alba. It will resolve over time but discontinue the Elocon because the cream could lead to further discoloration. Also make sure that you use sunscreen daily to prevent further discoloration.
