Question Topic

Leg hair loss problem

Question

Dear Dr. Khadavi, I'm a 32-year-old, caucasian, dark haired young man. For four to five years now the leg hair on my ankles and lower shins, and lately also on the internal part of my calves (on the left of my right calf and on the right of my left calf), has been thinning and falling down, with the result that now my ankles and lower shins are almost completely smooth. This hair loss is now spreading on the central part of my shins, curiously mainly on their front than on their back, while the rest of my hair body doesn't seem to have any problem. I'm in good health, I don't suffer from diabetes, since I noticed my hair loss I've avoided wearing tight socks and any time temperature allows it I don't wear socks at all. I don't wear tight clothing and, anyway, the zone of my body where my hair loss concentrates is not subjected to friction with my clothes. I've tried primrose oil with the hope to remedy this problem, but it didn't work at all. I'm a sunbather. Could this affect on my leg hair loss? If it does, why on my lower legs and not on the rest of the body? What can I do? I really hope you can give me some help because, although this leg hair loss doesn't cause me any serious problem (itch, for example) and is a situation I could easily live with, nonetheless causes me some embarassment since I consider my leg hair an important part of my masculinity. Best regards, Frank

Answer

Dear Frank, Some individuals start to notice gradual thinning of the hair on their leg either in the 30's or 40's. This is a normal varient and not associated with any disease. Unfortunately I know of no treatment for this.
