article about hair loss
Hi Dr. Bauman,
I am a writer for Men\'s fitness and we have a question from one our readers regarding whether or not wearing baseball hats causes hairloss. I was wondering if you could give me a good quote to include in the answer. Please email me or call me at 212.545.4854
Thank you very much]

Ariane,
The "number one" myth regarding male pattern hair loss is that it is caused by wearing hats. Male pattern hair loss is inherited. It is triggered by a hormone in the body which causes gradual miniaturization of the hair follicles on the top of the scalp. Hats are completely unrelated to the hair growth or hair loss process. However, it seems that men who have hair loss tend to prefer to "cover it up" with a hat. Also, if you tend to wear a hat often, sometimes you might 'forget' to get a haircut on a timely basis, AND (not to mention) your hair will typically look like a mess when you take the hat off. So, hats dont cause hair loss, but they can certainly make your hair loss LOOK alot worse. Obviously, if your readers are concerned about hair loss, they need to consider the combination approach of medication (to stop the progression of hair loss: PROPECIA) and a procedure (hair transplantation) to restore hair to the thinning and balding areas.
Let me know what other questions your readers have.
Sincerely,
Dr. B.
