BRETT COMBS 2004-04-13
Can skipping propecia use for a few days be detrimental?
I HAVE BEEN USING PROPECIA FOR ABOUT NINE MONTHS NOW. AND EVERY TIME IT IS TIME TO REFILL MY PRESCRIPTION I SOMETIMES FORGET TO AND I WILL LOSE A DAY OR SOMETIMES UP TO THREE DAYS INBETWEEN MY NEXT DOSAGE OF ONE PILL A DAY. IS THIS AFFECTING MY HAIR GROWTH? BECAUSE THE PLACE IM LOSING MY HAIR IS NOT IN THE CROWN BUT IN THE FRONT, AND IM NOT SEEING MUCH RESULTS. THANK YOU, SINCERELY BRETT COMBS.
Missing a day or two of Propecia (while not advisable) is probably not impacting the effectivness of the treatment. Sometimes it takes a full year to realize that the treatment is working. There is no reason that Propecia wouldn't work for you. Sometimes, however, many patients think the 'results' from Propecia are spectacular---this is simply unrealistic. The main goal of taking propecia is to stop or slow down the progression of the hair loss. It is easier to see the effects of propecia where you have 'more hair'-- in the crown. Many times, the hair loss in the frontal area is so severe, that the propecia doesn't LOOK like it is working, but it is. Propecia will block the progression of future hair loss, making hair transplantation more effective and efficient for you in the long-run. Do you have a hair restoration physcian monitoring the density up front for you? For my patients, we monitor the hairline, crown and other areas with microscopic photographs to track the densities there. We also take photos when you first come in BEFORE you start any treatment, so we can track the results.
My advice is to stick with the Propecia--I'm confident it is helping you to some degree.
Please let me know if you have additional questions.
Sincerely,
Dr. B
