Gray hair
Does hair ever turn gray during any single growing (anagen) phase?
Yes, but it would be unusual. It is sometimes possible to find hairs that show progressive loss of pigmentation. In most hairs, the amount of pigmentation is uniform along the hair shaft, implying that the graying process takes place at some stage in the interval between successive anagen phases or in early anagen prior to the onset of melanin production. The mechanism of hair graying is unknown. The simplest explanation would be to say that loss of pigmentation in the hair is due to an age-related decline in melanocyte function, but it may be due to a failure of the signaling mechanism responsible for localizing and activating melanocytes in the hair bulb during anagen development.
