Exercising and Baldness
Hello Dr. Bernstein,
Can excessive exercise cause baldness? Are there different types of exercise that are more likely to lead to hair loss?
I like bodybuilding but I am also losing my hair, and I prefer not to take Propecia because I want to gain muscle, not lose it.
What can I do?
Thanks,
David
Dear David,
Very vigorous excercise such as body building, increases testosterone and therefore can contribute to hair loss since the testosterone is converted to DHT. Propecia blocks the conversion to DHT without lowering testosterone, so this would be reaonable to take. It is a prescription that should be taken under a doctors supervision.
Sincerely,
Dr. Bernstein
