Medication hair loss
Hello Doctor
I'm 21 was on accutane and have been off it for 7 months now, and have begun to experience TE from it and have lost around half my hair.
My hair before accutane was nice and thick and I have no relatives that are bald. Currently,
I have hair loss all over my head and currently I'm loosing about 25-30 hairs a day on average.
I noticed that even when I wash my hair more frequently or less frequently, that on average, the number of hairs lost in a week stays the same.
Also, I have been seeing some new hair growth around my head, but some of these new hairs are falling out at around the 2cm stage.
I'm just wondering why these new hairs are fall out and if this is normal.
Secondly, since I'm already in my 7th month, I was wondering if you had experienced this condition with some of your other patients and if you have, when did they start to see their hair become thicker again.
Thank You
Dear Daniel,
With TE, you may have upto 100 hairs a day shed even after an acute episode of TE. It may take 6-12 months to recover after TE with small hairs 1-3 cm growing and then falling out. You will notice that these hairs will become thicker and fuller over time. Unfortunately, time is the only medicine for TE, but some recommend Minoxidil.
