Hello doctor, and thank you for taking questions.
I am 51, my hairline has receded maybe 1.5 inches and I am beginning to thin at the crown, I made an appt. with a dermatologist and he perscribed rogaine. What I am interested in is if I take this drug and quit will it accelerate the hair loss, also in your experience is excessive shedding a problem? I am not on any medication and never have been so taking a drug does not come easy for me. thanks for your time!
Pete, Thank you for your question. Rogaine(minoxidil--topical liquid) is certainly one of the FDA-approved therapies for stopping male pattern hair loss. However, the more effective treatment would be Propecia (finasteride, 1mg pill daily). The two treatments, propecia and minoxidil, can be used together. I routinely prescribe Propecia in my practice to men who have hereditary hair loss, and do so with confidence. Propecia is considered safe and effective, with a VERY low incidence of side-effects. 90% of guys taking Propecia look the SAME or BETTER after five years on the medication. For men in early stages of hair loss, the effects of Propecia can be quite impressive. However, you need to realize that it works mainly on follicles that are miniaturized (not 'dead and gone') so most of the time, it will NOT work to restore a hairline or bald spot--for that you will likely need transplantation. In the vast majority of my patients, we use Propecia (with or without Rogaine/minoxidil) to stabilize the progression of male pattern hair loss and use hair transplantation (follicular-unit micrografting) to artistically and undetectably restore a living and growing hairline.
