Help us choose ingredients for natural product

Post by HairLossFight.com »

Hi all,

I'm considering developing a natural product line for people with hair loss. Here's your chance to potentially have a say as to what ingredients get included.

I want the product to be completely natural.

I'm considering the following ingredients currently:

linoleic acid
alpha linoleic acid
gamma linoleic acid
green tea catechins
l-lysine
l-arganine
apple pectin
grape seed extract
melatonin
caffeine
evodia rutaecarpa
hemp oil
pomegranate actives

My goal for the product would be as follows:

1) should contain the top natural ingredients shown to be effective as either a growth-stimulant, dht-inhibitor, anti-androgen, or anti-inflammatory
2) should contain the minimal number of ingredients to have maximum effect in order to be hypoallergenic

This is serious, and I'm asking for your opinions on the matter.

Please note that if you participate in this thread and your ingredient or ingredients end up being used in the product or products that I end up producing, you agree that you will not receive any compensation. By participating in this thread you acknowledge that you are only offering an opinion, and you acknowledge that you will not receive any compensation from Morphollica or myself.

Looking forward to your thoughts on the matter!

When you say "natural"..do you mean with no preservatives etc? Would you also consider doing a shampoo?

Some extracts may contain one or more of some of those you've listed there. Green coffee bean extract, for example..would contain the caffeine. You listed green tea extract..some of those contain caffeine. "Blood of the Dragon" has many beneficial properties, including smelling good, besides being very high in procyanidins(as found in grape seed extract). On the smell(from Scentzilla.com):
The fragrance is marked by warm earthy amber and patchouli. I also detect a balsalmic orangey smell tucked into it. These elements are all anchored by a sweet, slightly sticky woody note and sandalwood, giving a strong impression of unlit incense. The perfume oil is incredibly potent, and a light hand is advised.

I find Dragons Blood to be one of the sexiest fragrances on men, if not THE sexiest. It works on women (this one, anyhow) as well, but I must confess that I do prefer discovering it on men instead.
Of course everything else you'd put in a topical could destroy that smell

I'd add Laminaria, because of this: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/b ... f904.alice

I and others seem to have noticed improvements with it..although it's hard to tell if one is using numerous things.

This one I'm just throwing out there..I have no idea if it'd be good as a topical: http://www.qrgbioscience.com/prevagen.aspx

Nucleotides are another that *look* good..but who knows.

Loquat leaf extract( corosolic acid): http://www.personalcaremagazine.com/Sto ... Story=1911

SOD would also be nice..but it seems it's hard to keep stable etc.

I think that when combining a number of ingredients into one product, possible interactions are important to consider. I believe that product with fewer high quality ingredients will be better than one packed with as many good sounding ingredients as possible.

That new hair loss shampoo Revita is an example, it contains tons of great sounding ingredients but reports from users were dismal.

But with Revita it could be the keto...and/or the company just doesn't have a clue.

You have to keep in mind that even an individual ingredient can contain many separate ingredients/actives. Then even using just a few- how would one know if they're going to react negatively?(this is why I think it's a little goofy to be researching each ingredient to death and finding one "bad" thing about it and tossing that ingredient out. How the heck does one know how the other ingredients in the topical would make it "not bad"..or that all the good in all the other ingredients won't somehow also do something that would be considered "bad"..etc)

This isn't the greatest comparison..but look at what food you eat and supplements you take etc. Too much of anything can be bad...but for the most part a little of this and that of various things should be good. I guess I'd look at my own experience- I've used quite a few things with quite a few ingredients. I can only say positive things about it, except when I took a break from topicals(didn't have a choice really) for the most part..for a few months.

You have a very good point Jacob, it seems next to impossible to find all possible interactions of these ingredients.

Thanks for the insights guys.

I know that one can't know all the possible interactions between all the ingredients. That's why I want to narrow it down to a minimal list of key ingredients. Also, as you implied James, I think in the case of a hair loss treatment and the number of ingredients it has, 'less is more' is a good rule of thumb to follow. I also think this makes the product less likely to cause allergic reactions in people since there are less things in it to react to.

Having said that, the list I made is obviously by no means comprehensive, but I think it covered a number of natural ingreds. that cover the basics when it comes to the different modalities for fighting hair loss. I want to basically wittle down this list (and perhaps add some things that aren't in it) and work from there.

Cheers

You could be allergic or whatever to one ingredient though. As I said previously, I've been using a # of products with quite a few ingredients in each one. I've yet to turn into an alien  One of the reasons I use so many things is because there is nothing out there that is causing tons of hair growth on people(ok..there are a few exceptions for *some*) I'd prefer to use a large # of things to try to beat the odds. The things you listed can all be found in something already- even a combo of them. Except for maybe evodia rutaecarpa unless there's another name for it- haven't looked into it much.

Lots of times people are sensitive to pg or even alcohol. I suppose even a preservative could be the problem.

My point is simply that there is a higher likelihood of sensitivity the more ingredients there are in a product. That's why I want to include ingredients that are as hypoallergenic as possible while trying to put as many in there as I can to meet all the different modalities for fighting hair loss.

Anyway, please keep the ingreds. coming! Anything that is being discussed out there that has a modicum of science behind it, I want to know about it!

Cheers,
Sam

http://fromasepta.com/asepta/5ANP.htm
"A.N.P. acts on the dermal papilla by activating the production of SH groups, indicative of active metabolism vital to the synthesis of methionine and cysteine, the essential amino acid constituents of hair, eyelashes, eyebrows, and nails "DISCOVERY OF HORSEMANE (ANP)

In the majority of mammals, the hair bulb is located in a layer of a very particular type of oily tissue. The permanent presence of this oily mass suggests that it is necessary for hair growth. These observations were made in animals with manes such as lions, giraffes, horses, etc. The discovery that this oily substance has a highly beneficial effect on the phaneres (keratinised parts of the human body: nails, eyelashes and hair) was made in a hospital

"Histochemical studies have shown that "Tricholipids" mobilise an active form of sulphur, the thiol or SH groups. This points to an active growth and regeneration metabolic process, vital to active biosynthesis of cysteine and methionine, the sulphurated amino acids which are vital constituents of nails and hair. Pharmacological studies have shown that certain specific enzyme activities, such as phosphatase activity in tissue located at the base of hairs, increase after treatment with Tricholipids. Tricholipids penetrate very quickly which means faster tissue mobilisation and stimulation of bulb activity leading to hair growth. A.N.P. contains specific substances and a high concentration of essential fatty acids including linoleic acid of the omega 3 family. Its intense biodynamic stimulation of hair and nail growth has been confirmed by pharmacodynamic studies and a clinical study."
Study on it: http://fromasepta.com/asepta/5ANPStudies.htm

I suppose it'd be hard to get it in bulk though.

I'm going to look into L-Carnatine based on a recent study.... I posted the abstract for this study in another thread.

I had to put this project on hiatus for a while, but I am still very much considering it. In the meantime, my focus is to get the boards up to a healthy level of activity, but I would still like to hear about interesting potential ingredients for a product. If you can think of any, keep'em coming.
