Finasteride for women

I've heard that they're doing tests on finasteride for women. Anyone else heard about this? What I don't get is why weren't these tests successful in the FDA trials? Has anyone else heard this? My wife has thinning hair and minoxidil didn't work for her.

Jayj, the problem with Fin for women was that DHT is required during pregnancy in order for the genitals of the fetus to develop properly. Since Fin blocks the formation of DHT then obviously pregnant women or women that want to become pregnant at some point should NOT take it!

However, for those women that cannot have children for whatever reason, it has recently been shown to be effective in combating androgenetic alopecia.

I'm a female and I've been using it since October 2005. I think it helps a little, but I haven't seen dramatic results. I also use minoxidil and no dramatic results there either.

Tricia that's very interesting!

They said that women take it with a contraceptive pill so there is no risk of getting pregnant. I suppose pregnant women will just have to stop taking the finasteride when pregnant

No woman who is planning to get pregnant or could become pregnant on accident should take finasteride because it will stay in your system for 2 weeks after stopping it.

If a woman was pregnant with a male fetus, he could be deformed in the time it takes for her to stop finasteride.
